While gravel driveways are typically less expensive than asphalt or concrete driveways, they require more upkeep. It is critical to choose the correct gravel for your driveway if you want a solid, durable surface. Gravel driveways are composed of three layers of gravel. Each layer is composed of a different size of gravel to serve a specific purpose.

  • The Base Layer: This layer is composed of larger gravel. Use angular gravel that is about four inches in diameter; round gravel won’t bind together and moves easily under the weight of vehicles. The flat surfaces of angular gravel allow it to interlock and create a more durable foundation for your driveway.
  • The Middle Layer: The middle layer of your gravel driveway should be composed of smaller angular gravel – about the size of a golf ball. It will fit well against and between the larger gravel of the foundation, which further creates a solid base for your driveway.
  • The Top Layer: This top layer should be composed of about four inches of smaller gravel pieces. It will sit well against and between the angular layer below it. This size gravel contains rock dust, which causes the pieces of gravel to adhere better to each other.

As you’re planning your gravel driveway, be sure to plan for a layer of landscape fabric. Add it once your foundation has been dug and before you place your first layer of foundation gravel. Taking this step will discourage weeds from sprouting. When choosing your gravel, specify that you would like uncleaned gravel; this will bring maximum adhesion, so the layers bind into as solid a surface as possible.
